I have chosen to support three charities this year. My first is: 'A place to be' the youth club in Haslemere. It started about about 30 years ago, when youth clubs were being closed in favour of outreach workers. This approach favoured those with problems, but the average youngster wanted a safe place to talk with their friends and enjoy a soft drink. A group of us got together and managed to find funding for a weekly meeting place. This attracted many teenagers who did not want to hang around outside on street corners.
The club is still going, and meets on a Friday night at Shottermill Junior school. It still provides a place for youngsters to hang out and meet safely. The youth workers provide various projects and activities.
We have had loads of fun already this half term doing pottery, football, dodgeball, mindfulness, paper aeroplane competition and much more! We are always looking for volunteers to come and join in the fun to help us keep running.
A Place To Be relies on lovely volunteers to help us on Friday evenings between 6:30pm-9:15pm - without them we would be lost!
Volunteers can get involved with us in a number of ways. Each night we need help with sports, crafts, tuck shop, chill space (just hanging out with the young people!), general admin (registers ect) and lots more!
We are always looking for new volunteers, so if this is something you may be interested in, click here, send us your details and we will contact you. (Which would be great!)
These young people are our future and we must support them.
